The schedule for the series of “Kisan Melas” (farmers’ fairs) to be conducted in September 2023 has been made public by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana. At PAU, preparations for the Kisan Melas, which will be hosted under the patronage of VC Satbir Singh Gosal, are well under way.
The first mela will take place on September 5 in Nag Kalan Jahangir in Amritsar, followed by Ballowal Saunkhri on September 8 and Gurdaspur on September 12, according to G S Buttar, director of extension education. On September 14 and 15, the two-day Kisan Mela at PAU, Ludhiana, will be held, he added. On September 19, 22, and 27, respectively, Kisan Melas will be conducted in Faridkot, Rauni (Patiala), and Bathinda.

PAU Kisan Mela 2023 Ludhiana
The idea of kisan melas was originally introduced at the nation’s agricultural institutions by Punjab Agricultural University. In 1967, this activity first began. These fairs are typically conducted in Ludhiana twice a year, in March and September. On this occasion, competitions for farm produce are organised in addition to field demonstrations and an agro-industrial exhibition. Regional fairs are now held twice a year, just before the rabi and kharif crops are sown.
This is done to meet the demands of the farmers in the south-western zone (at bathinda), rainfed zone (at ballowal saunkhri, nawanshahar), and central plain zone (at patiala). Each time a Kisan Mela is held at the Pau Campus, almost 0.1 million farmers attend. Two chief minister’s awards, one in horticulture and one in agriculture, are handed to the progressive farmers during the march kisan melas.
